Winter Morning Routine

Yes, it is technically spring but this morning I woke up to about an inch of snow on the ground and it is still going strong right now. I, unlike many people around here, LOVE the snow and cold weather! I think that it is peaceful and beautiful…and I don’t tan well so covering up works well for me. Winter is a very drying time for many peoples skin as well as a depressing time for many people who feel stuck up in the house. So I wanted to give you an insight on how I deal with my skin, mood, and life in winter.

Skin & Makeup

I start my day taking care of my skin. I have dry patches on my skin year round but they definitely get worse in the cold and forced heat weather. I already shared my simplistic skin routine but for winter I tend to more intensely moisturize. Exfoliating daily is a must in the winter because it will get rid of all the dead skin cells and unclog pores so that the moisturizer can get in deeper. However, I find that using a gentle exfoliant in winter helps to keep my skin less irritated. This winter I tried out Mario Badescu Strawberry Facial Scrub (Ulta $15.00) and it worked like a charm! It has the perfect balance of moisture and intense cleansing; I would highly recommend it.

For moisturizer I use my tried and true favorite Queen Helene Shea Butter (Sally Beauty $5.99) before bed, but in the morning I switch to the Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator (Macy’s $39.00). Yes, that name is a mouthful and the price is a little steep in my opinion but it is well worth it. It doesn’t look or feel greasy and it sits great under makeup or on its own.

I am normally not a full foundation type of person and this is especially true in the winter. I lean towards BB and CC Creams because of their many benefits for the skin. I switch between two normally, Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream (Target $7.49) & IT Cosmetics Your Skin but Better CC cream (Ulta $38). These both add hydration to my skin and give me that little bit of coverage I want.

Mood & Food

Although I love winter and snow, I realize many people do not and end up waking up in a bad mood for months on end. Whenever I wake up in a less than wonderful mood I start by looking at motivational & inspirational quotes I have saved. They tend to lighten my mood and make me feel as if I can accomplish today and whatever it brings.

As for breakfast and such in the winter I like to keep it simple. I always love to start my day with a nice cup of tea, normally green tea of some sort. My favorites at the moment are Orange Jasmine Green Tea from Tea Forte (EBay $24.99) and Zen Green Tea from Tazo (Walmart $2.98). They both have enough caffeine to where they wake me up but not  too much to where it would make me sick. The flavor of both is also amazing, sometimes green teas are bland and taste like grass, but these two do not.

As for actual food I like to keep it healthy with mostly fresh fruit and some eggs along with whole wheat toast. I find that a meal like that helps keep me full until lunch time but doesn’t weight me down too much. Plus it works great before the gym!

Exercise

Most people know that exercise is a safe and easy way to get those endorphins flowing and that could really help with depression from the weather. Even just running for 30 min could help greatly! For me I stick to a weight lifting plan to stay toned and then do cardio the three days I do not have lifting planned. Yes, that sounds like a lot but once I got use to the routine it really wasn’t that bad; and it helps wake me up for the day. My advice would be to start off slow, maybe lifting 2-3 times a week and cardio once and then move up from there. That way you can get use to the routine and work your way in.

After the exercise I like to have a quick shower and then simply get dressed and ready to leave for the day. Although my winter routine seems to have a lot of steps I keep it fairly simple as to not overdo myself.
